Austin Chronicle's Best "Splash"

A 1766 2/3 yard (53 laps of the 33 1/3 yard pool) swimming race. Named Austin Chronicle’s Best “Splash” this classic event takes place at Deep Eddy Pool, the oldest outdoor pool in Texas and a true Austin historical gem.  Each participant gets his own lane.  Competition is open to adults 18 and over.

Deep Eddy Mile | Established 2002

WHO: Open to swimmers eighteen and older. Discounted entry fee for 2020 registered American Swimming Association members.

WHAT: A “Deep Eddy MILE!!!” 1766 2/3 yard (53 laps of the 33 1/3 yard pool).  Named Austin Chronicle’s “Best Splash” this classic event takes place at Deep Eddy Pool, the oldest outdoor pool in Texas and a true Austin gem. 

WHEN: Tentatively Saturday, August 1, 2020. Warm-up starts at 7:30 am, First heat starts at 8:00 a.m.

WHERE: Deep Eddy Pool, 401 Deep Eddy Drive. Deep Eddy pool is a 10-lane 331/3 yard well-water pool. Expect the water temperature to be between 70 to 74 degrees Farenheit. There is a large grassy area with shade trees surrounding the pool.

WHAT ELSE: Each swimmer will get their own lane.  Competition open to adults 18 and over.  Heats are seeded, where possible, according to age group and time.  Heat sheet will be distribute by email the day prior to the event.

WHY: Because …it is a great way to get/stay healthy, fit, and look good …it is your opportunity to test yourself against the competition (including yourself) …it is your opportunity to establish an A.S.A. certified, Deep Eddy Pool record …it’s fun

TIMERS/COUNTERS: Each swimmer must provide at least one timer (a person . . . friend, family, fan) and, if desired, someone to count. We will provide a numbered lap counter (device) for each lane.

AGE GROUPS: A swimmer’s age on the day of the event determines the swimmer’s age group.  The race is contested by gender in each of the following age groups: 18-29, 30-39, 40-49, 50-59, 60-69, 70-74, 75-79, 80-84 and so on. 

RULES: 2020 ASA Rules will govern this event. No fins, snorkels, heart monitors, wristwatches, pull buoys, floats or any other artificial aids permitted. No tech suits. A swimmer may wear only one suit. Please make sure you wear an acceptable suit as follows: Swim suits shall not cover a man’s body higher than the top of the pelvic bone or the belly button and shall not cover any part of the body below the top of the knee. Swim suits shall not cover a woman’s body outside the shoulder-joints or above the shoulder-line and shall not cover the any part of the body below mid-thigh. The material of suits may consist only of cotton, lycra, nylon, polyester, and spandex. Any swimmer wishing to compete in a suit constructed of other materials must apply to ASA for permission in writing. AWARDS: Awards to the winners of each contested age group.

LOCATION: 401 Deep Eddy Drive, Austin, Texas

ENTRY FEES & DEADLINES: Discounted fees with ASA membership: Join ASA and enjoy discounted event fees for the Deep Eddy Mile and 6 other event days (Lake Travis Relay & 5 days of Highland Lakes Challenge swims) in 2019. You can register for $25 with your entry. All fees are non-refundable. Late registrants (after 8/9) are not guaranteed a t-shirt. 

DEADLINES & FEES:

  • Entries rec’d on or before Sunday, 7/26/20 — $54 (ASA Member) / $69 (Non-member)
  • “Late” If accepted, entries received Mon. 7/27 and after (if available): $69 (ASA Member) / $84 (Non-member). Late entry not guaranteed a t-shirt.

T-SHIRTS: Participant T-shirt included with on-time entries. Please designate your t-shirt size. Additional t-shirts may be pre-ordered on the entry form. Late entrants (after 8/11) are not guaranteed a t-shirt.
